Birth of Hanumana

Agastya said I am not sure what to say about Hanumana. The more I say, less it sounds. Son of the Wind God, Pavana, he was born of Anjana, a female vanara. Let me tell you about his birth.

The vanari Anjana was very beautiful. She was married to the vanara, Kesari. After marriage, Anjana lived on the mountain Malaya with Kesari. One day, Pavana was passing by. He saw her and was enamored with her. He was not able to say or do anything, fearing Kesari. One day, when Kesari was not home, Pavana came and embraced her. Anjana tried to resist but it was futile. Pavana ravished her. Anjana was shocked. What had happened to her?
Pavana said Forgive me. I was not able to control myself, seeing you. Do not worry. A son will be born to you who will be a great warrior.
After eighteen months, Anjana, on the day of a new moon, gave birth to Hanumana. After birth, when the child was being breastfed by his mother, he saw the sun slowly rise in the sky. Thinking this was a fruit, the child jumped into the sky. That was the day of the solar eclipse and Rahu was coming to swallow the sun when Hanumana appeared there and tried to swallow the sun. Scared, Rahu fled from there.
Rahu went to Indra and complained that a new Rahu had come.
Taking his Vajra iu his hand, Indra came to see what was happening, riding on his elephant.
Hanumana seeing Airavata, wanted to play with the elephant. Indra released his Vajra which hit Hanumana. Hanumana fell on the Malaya mountain.
Taking her son in her lap, Anjana became crying. Pavana came to her and Anjana said This is the child born out of sin and now this is the outcome.
Pavana was angry. He withdrew his flow from the earth. With no wind, people were unable to breathe.
Brahma came to Pavana and asked him to save the earth. Pavana agreed. Brahma the asked the Gods to come and bless the child.
Yama came and said the child would be immortal.
Varuna said the child would not fear water.
Agni said Fire would not burn him.
In the end Indra came and said It is because of me that this has happened. From today, your body will be like a Vajra.

Hanumana grew up on the Malaya mountain learning the arts of weapons and the scriptures.
He used to get into arguments with his teachers and was once cursed that he would forget about his powers and the knowledge.

If Hanumana knew his own power, he could win any war in a day.

Telling all this, Agastya took leave of Rama and went back to his ashrama.

Sita feeds Hanumana

Rama said to Vibhishana - You are like my brother. We were four brothers, today we are five. We will help each other in time of need.
A grand feast was organized with Sita in charge of the food preparation. She then came served everyone. All were satisfied except Hanumana. She kept serving Hanumana and kept finishing whatever was there and wanted more. Sita started thinking. She thought - The world calls me the mother of all. Why is it that I am not able to satisfy the hunger of Hanumana.
She closed her eyes and saw that this was Shiva in the form of Hanumana.
Sita then got some food and uttering the mantra of Shiva 'Om Namah Shivaya', she served Hanumana. Hanumana said he was satisfied.

After the feast the vanaras and rakshasas who had come for the coronation stared taking their leave.

Going to the chariot Pushpaka, Rama bowed down and asked it to return to Kubera, from whom Ravana had forcibly got it.
When the chariot went to Kubera, he asked the chariot to return back to Rama and stay with him till he remained on this earth.

In peace and harmony, Rama began ruling the kingdom of Ayodhya.

Hanumana shows the name of Rama in his body

All the Gods and their consorts came to see the coronation of Rama. Rama was given many gifts by all. Rama also gave gifts to all who had come to attend the coronation. Rama gave jewels to all. Hanumana was missed. He sat quietly wondering what he had done to deserve this. Sita noticed this. Taking a necklace from her body, she wanted to give it to Hanumana. She looked at Rama. Rama said Give it whom you wish to give.
Sita gave the necklace to Hanumana who wore it and bowed down to Sita. Sita said You will be devoid of sickness and old age. You will be immortal. Till the date the name of Rama is taken, you will live on this earth.
Hanumana took the necklace, looked at it and broke it into pieces. Lakshmana said to Rama, Hanumana does not appreciate the value of the necklace and has destroyed it. Rama said Ask Hanumana the reason for the same.
Hanumana said I accepted this as it something very precious. I do not see the name of Rama anywhere in this, so I have discarded it.
Lakshmana said In that case, you do not have the name of Rama on your body, so why do you keep your body.
Hanumana then with his nails, tore apart his chest. There, in each and every bone of his, the name of Rama was written.
Ashamed, Lakshmana said there is no devotee of Rama greater than you, Hanumana.

Hanumana gets the weapon for Rama

Rama appealed to the Goddess to help him. He said he was sad and frustrated.
The Goddess was quiet.
Rama thought rescuing Sita now seemed a distant dream.

Durga then appeared. She said You are all knowing Lord of the Universe. If you think back, you will realize that in an earlier birth, Ravana was a gate keeper of yours who was cursed. Do not worry. You needed to this worship to start the process of my process in the autumn season. I will now leave Ravana.

Rama, filled with new energy, picked up his bow and arrow. Brahma asked Pavana to send a message to Rama to make the chandi impure. Rama asked Vibhishana for advise. Vibhishana turned to Hanumana who got ready.
Taking the form a fly, Hanumana went where the chandi was being recited. Taking a chance, he resumed his own self and erased a few shlokas from the book. The book was incomplete and impure. Seeing this, the Goddess left Ravana.

Ravana appealed to the Goddess to stop, but she went back straight to Kailasha.

Ravana then thought, Rama was not aware of all this. Rama would now go back leaving Sita.

In Rama's camp, Vibhishana said to Rama - Let me tell you about something that happened long back. When Ravana had prayed to Brahma and wanted to be immortal, Brahma had not granted that boon. Brahma had told him that his cut limbs and heads would regenerate. He would die with only specific weapon. No other weapon would be able to kill him. The weapon would remain in Ravana's house, hidden and guarded. This was weapon was guarded by Mandodari. This weapon would have to aimed at his navel.

Rama was aghast. Who would be able to get the weapon from Mandodari? Hanumana said he would get the weapon. Taking the blessings of all, Hanumana went towards Mandodari's palace. Taking the form of an old brahmin and approached Mandodari.

Mandodari seeing the brahmin, gave him a place to sit. The brahmin said he would not sit. He said he was a great astrologer and had come to bless Mandodari and Ravana. He said no one would be able to defeat Ravana because of the hidden wealth.

Mandodari wanted to know what he was saying. The brahmin said he knew about the weapon and wanted to bless it. If the queen did not want that, he would leave.

Mandodari said she had hidden that carefully. The brahmin said Vibhishana would tell Rama about that. Mandodari said even Vibhishana did not know where it was. Pointing to a pillar, the queen said she had hidden it inside that.

Hanumana, taking his own shape, kicked the pillar and broke it, He was able to see the weapon. He picked that up and went to Rama with that.

Rama hugged Hanumana.

Mahiravana dies

In the heaven Shiva asked Brahma how Rama and Lakshmana would be freed. Brahma said -
Once there was a Gandharva called Shatrudhanu who used to sing and dance in front of Vishnu. Once the sage Ashtavakra came to see Vishnu. Seeing the sage's body which was bent, the gandharva started laughing and lost the beat at which he was singing. The sage cursed him to be born as a rakshasha.
The gandharva said This is too big a curse for something which I did. I had no bad intention.
The sage said What I said will happen. You will stay in the nether world and will be a devotee of Shiva and Durga. Vishnu will be born as Rama and then Hanumana will cut off your head and you will be relieved.

Mahiravana asked Rama to bow and Rama asked him to show how. The moment Mahiravana did that, Hanumana cut off Mahiravana's head.

The gandharva was freed and Hanumana freed the tied Rama and Lakshmana. Rama embraced Hanumana.

Hanumana talks to Goddess Mahamaya

An announcement was heard saying the worship of Mahamaya would be starting.
Rama said I am not sure what to do Hanumana. I am not armed and I do not have my army with me. How do I fight this enemy?
Hanumana said With your blessings, I will kill your enemy with rocks and trees. Till then I will talk to the Goddess and see what she wishes.
Rama said Please do not be late.
Hanumana said He will be back in a moment.

As a bee, he flew to the temple and said to the Goddess Mahiravana has brought Rama and Lakshmana to be sacrificed to you. Is that what you wish?

The Goddess laughed and said I do not wish that. Mahiravana has brought Rama over as his death. I will tell you how to end Mahiravana. He will bring Rama here and will tell him to bow before me. At that moment, Rama should say he has no idea how to do that and Mahiravana should show him.
Mahiravana will lay down prostate before me, and seeing that moment take the sword from my hand and cut off his head. This land is now blessed because of Rama, who is very dear to Shiva. Go and tell Rama what I told you.

Hanumana told Rama what the Goddess had said. He said He would be around like a bee.

Soon Mahiravana came and fetched Rama and Lakshmana. HE placed on the right of the Goddess and started his worship.

Hanumana goes in search of Rama and Lakshmana

Sugriva said to Hanumana - All know you to be a great devotee of Rama. You jumped across the sea to find Sita. Go in search of Rama. Mahiravana tricked you and you must go in search, to make amends.

Hanumana's eyes were wet. He said I will go in search. I will look everywhere. If I do not find them, I will not show my face to anyone.

Hanumana then entered the tunnel that had been used by Mahiravana to capture Rama and Lakshmana.

On the other end of the tunnel he saw a wonderful world. Sun was shining brightly. He saw Ganga there, in a form called Bhogavati. He saw many sages, among them he saw the sage Kapila.

He saw the palace of Mahiravana. Disguising himself, he entered the palace to look out for Rama. He saw many good looking people there. He saw houses made of Gold. Finding a tree, he climbed that up and waited there.

People were surprised to see a monkey there. They wondered where the monkey had come from. An elderly person there said - I am reminded of an old story. Mahiravana had prayed to Goddess Mahamaya, to become immortal. The Goddess had not granted that boon. She instead granted him a boon that he would be invincible in battle from all except humans and vanaras. Now Mahiravana has captured humans and brought them over, and I see a vanara here. This is not a good sign.

Hanumana was happy to hear this. He waited on the tree. The tree was on the bank of a lake and many women were coming there to fetch water in their pitchers. Off them, one was a royal maid. The other women asked her, what was the occasion? There was celebration going on in the palace.
The maid said What I tell you, make sure sure, no one hears. The king has brought over two exceptionally handsome young men. They are to be sacrificed to Mahamaya today.

Hanumana heard this. He quickly got off the tree and went into the main palace. There he saw a room which was heavily guarded. Taking the form of a bee, Hanumana went into the room and saw Rama and Lakshmana. Taking his own form, he woke them up. Lakshmana asked - Where are are Sugriva and Angada? Where are we? Where is Vibhishana?

Hanumana said You have been captured by Mahiravana.

Hanumana creates an enclosure

Rama said to Hanumana, I am relying on you to save us all.
Jambuvana said Mahiravana will not come in open. He will come to steal Rama and Lakshmana. The best is, if all are awake. Let us sit together and plan how to handle this.

Hanumana said he would create a fort using his tail. Rama and Lakshmana would stay inside that, the whole night.

Hanumana coiled his tail and created an enclosure. Sugriva and Angada went inside. Sugriva took the responsibility of guarding Rama while Angada took the responsibility of guarding Lakshmana.

Some more vanaras also went inside to guard Rama and Lakshmana.

Sun is released

All were overjoyed. Jambuvana said, It was best that Hanumana returned the mountain to its original place. Hanumana rose into the sky with the mountain.
Ravana saw Hanumana flying. He asked seven rakshasas to go and grab Hanumana and kill him. They flew behind Hanumana and tried to grab him. Grabbing them with his tail, Hanumana dashed to the ground, killing them. One of them managed to survive and he went and gave the news to Ravana.

Hanumana in the meanwhile kept the mountain where it was. Now knowing which herb was medicinal, Hanumana took a few leaves and crushed it in his hands. He had sprinkled the juice over the Gandharvas whom he had killed. The gandharvas came to life and started attacked Hanumana again. Hanumana fled from there and flew back towards Lanka.

Hanumana came back to Rama. Rama then asked Hanumana what was there in his armpit. Hanumana then told Rama how he had captured Sun and kept him in his armpit.

Rama asked Hanumana to release the Sun. Hanumana spread his hands. Sun came out and went skywards.

Rama embraced Hanumana.

Hanumana meets Bharata and Lakshmana is revived

Hanumana went back to the mountain. He started looking for the medicines. He then saw the gandharvas singing and dancing there. He went to them asked them to tell him where he could find the medicines.
The gandharvas said they obeyed only HaHa and HuHu who were their kings. Saying this they started attacking Hanumana. Hanumana also started fighting back.
HaHa and HuHu came to fight but were defeated by Hanumana. Hanumana then started moving from peak to peak but could not find the medicine.
Not seeing any other alternative, Hanumana tugged at the mountain and uprooted it. Many animals started running around. Trees fell. Hanumana jumped in the sky with the mountain in his hand.

Hanumana then flew over Kailasha and passed over Ayodhaya, while travelling southwards. Having heard a lot about Bharata,  He flew  Nandigram, where Bharata was living. Bharata saw something in the sky. It was huge and its shadow was covering the land. The moonlight falling on Rama's sandals was being covered. Who dared do this?  Now knowing who was this, Bharata gave a catapult to Shatrughna. Shatrughna aimed towards the sky. Taking the name of Rama, the catapult was released. The iron ball that had been propelled, hit Hanumana. Hanumana lost his consciousness. Still holding onto the mountain and the Sun, Hanumana landed in Nandigram. He started taking the name of Rama.

Hearing the name of Rama, Bharata came running. Bharata asked him who he was and how he knew Rama who had gone to the forests with Lakshmana and Sita.
Hanumana was in intense pain and was unable to speak.
Vashishtha then came there. The great sage knew what was happening in Lanka and had not said anything. He then said to Bharata, Why have you stopped this great person?
Vashistha, with some mantras, relieved the pain of Hanumana.
Hanumana then said all that had happened so far.

Bharata and Shatrughna broke into tears hearing the tale from Hanumana. Bharat then said I will come with you to Lanka. Shatrughna will handle Ayodhya.

Hanumana said Rama would not allow this. Bharata said Then go fast , Hanumana.
Hanumana said he had no strength left, after having been hit by the catapult.

Bharata then got an arrow. He asked Hanumana to climb up on the arrow along with the mountain and Sun. Hanumana was amazed to see Bharata's strength. He, who was able to lift Hanumana, the sun and the mountain on the arrow.

Bharata released the arrow. Withe speed of the wind, Hanumana landed in Lanka. All were stunned to see Hanumana come there with the mountain. Hanumana said he had been unable to recognize the medicine, thus he had got the whole mountain.
Rama said Hanumana , You are Great. There is nothing you cannot do.

Rama then asked Sushena to get the medicine. Sushena climbed on the mountain and started searching its peaks for the medicine. He got the herbs and made a paste from them. He then held the paste under Lakshmana's nose.

Blood started flowing in the veins. The broken ribs became like before. Slowly Lakshmana came to life. Lakshmana got up, and with tears in his eyes, Rama embraced Lakshmana.

Hanumana kills Kalnemi and captures the sun

Hanumana soon landed there. Seeing Kalnemi disguised as a sage, bowed down to him. Hanumana said who he was and said he had come to look for the Vishalyakarani herb that he needed to take back before day break. Kalnemi asked Hanumana to rest, eat something and then go looking for what he needed. Hanumana said he was in a hurry and had no time. Kalnemi said If a guest went away hungry, that would be a sin. He said there was a stream close by and if Hanumana had a bath there and came back, he would try and help him.

Hanumana agreed. He went and jumped into the waters. The sound was heard by the crocodile. The crocodile, Kumbharini, came rushing. Seeing Kumbharini, the fishes in the water started swimming away.Kumbharini came and grabbed Hanumana.

Hanumana was stunned. What was this happening? Hanumana jumped up on the bank of the stream with Kumbharini still holding onto him. With his nails, Hanumana tore apart Kumbharini's body. Kumbharini then changed into a beautiful woman who rose into the skies. She said she was a celestial girl called Gandhakali. She used to go around dancing. Once while dancing, she had fallen on the sage Daksha. The sage had cursed her to be a crocodile saying when she met Hanumana she would be relived. The woman then told Hanumana to be careful of the false sage. Saying this, she vanished.

Kalnemi was happy. Hanumana was not comingback, which meant he had been eaten up by the crocodile. He began thinking of ruling Lanka with Ravana and also get Mandodari as his wife.
Hanumana then appeared there.

Kalnemi was not sure what to say. Hanumana said I know you are not a sage. Show your real self. Kalnemi appeared before Hanumana in his rakshasa form. Both began fighting. Hanumana, pressing his knee of Kalnemi's chest, killed him. Hanumana then picked up the body, swung it in the sky and flung it. Kalnemi's lifeless body landed in Lanka.

Ravana was shocked to see this. He need to do something. He then sent for the Sun God and asked him to go up in the sky. The sun said It was still night and there were hours to go before it was time.
Ravana said he did not care.

Sun reluctantly agreed to go.

Hanumana saw this. He jumped up in the sky and appeared before the Sun. Sun was unable to travel. Hanumana was blocking his way. Sun asked his charioteer who was this blocking the way. The charioteer said it was a vanara. Sun said he would burn this vanara.

Hanumana heard this and bowed down to Sun and requested him not go up in the sky else Lakshmana would die.
Sun said he would not be able to disobey Ravana.
Hanuman then grabbed the Sun and locked him under his armpit. The sun was captured.

Ravana tells Kalnemi to go to Gandhamadana

Ravana sent for Kalnemi, a demon. Kalnemi was related to Ravana. Ravana said - Hanumana is going to Gandhamadana to get medice for Lakshmana. if he goes there and gets the medicine before the sun rises, Lakshmana will live, else he will will die. I need you to go to the mountain and stop Hanumana. You are an expert in magic. Do something to prevent Hanumana from coming back before dawn. If Hanumana dies, I will give you half the kingdom of Lanka.

Kalnemi said Hanumana is very clever. If he sees me, he will kill me. Tell me how I should approach him.
Ravana said You will think of a way, I trust you. I will tell you this. I know the mountain very well. There is a stream in which resides a crocodile. No one touches the water of the stream, fearing the crocodile. Hanumana does not know Gandhamadana well. Find an excuse and send Hanumana in the waters. Take up the guise of a sage. Sit there. When Hanumana comes there. Ask him to have a bath in the stream and then come to you. Hanumana will get killed by the crocodile and that will be the end of Lakshmana and thereby Rama.

Kalnemi said I will be inviting my death by going close to Hanumana. Have you forgotten that you got slapped by him and fell off your chariot. You are sending me to my death.

Ravana started getting angry. Kalnemi said it is one and the same for me. I die either in your hands or Hanumana's hand.

Kalnemi was strange to look at, with eight hands and four heads. Taking the guise of a sage, Kalnemi went to Gandhamadana and set up his ashrama there.

Hanumana gets ready

Rama rushed back and took Lakshmana's head on his lap. He started looking at others for help.
He said Lakshmana is a part of me. Without Lakshmana I am nothing. I will not return back to Ayodhya. I came to the forest on my father's word and this is what has happened.

The Gods in the heaven said - Do not grieve Rama, Lakshmana will live.

Rama said to Sushena - Please help my brother.

Sushena said Lakshmana still has some life in him. Please send Hanumana to get the medicine. With that, I will bring Lakshmana back to life.

Rama said I am in no position to do any thing, you please tell Hanumana.

Sushena then said to Hanumana - Please get the medicine for Lakshmana. Go to the mountain called Gandhamadana. There is the medicine called Vishalyakarani. The mountain has nine peaks. One one peak live Shiva. One the second peak lives the Sun. Third peak is the abode of the Gandharvas. Fouth peak has Sal trees. Fifth peak has lions and tigers. The sixth peak has a river flowing. One the banks of the river are the medicinal trees with blue flowers and yellow leaves, The branches are red in color and it has golden colored vines. Get that for me. This has to be brought before the sun rises. Beware of the Gandharvas HaHa and HuHu who live there.

Rama said this will take years, how will Hanumana come back before dawn.

Hanumana said Do not worry, I will go and get the medicine before the night ends.

Saying this, Hanumana got ready. He folded his ears and using his tail for balancing, jumped into the sky. He increased his size to twenty yojanas and sped on.

Ravana saw this. He knew Hanumana was going for the medicine to revive Lakshmana. He needed to foil Hanumana's attempt.

Hanumana revives all

Seeing the mountain not respond, Hanumana got angry. He started grinding his teeth in anger. It was time to teach the mountain a lesson. He started pulling at the base of the mountain. With a great creaking sound, the mountain was dug out. It created chaos on the mountain. Animals started falling on each other. Many sages meditating were rudely awakened.

Taking the form of a sage, the mountain appeared in front of Hanumana. The sage asked Hanumana who he was and why he was acting in that manner.

Hanumana said He was a servant of Rama and had come to take the medicinal herbs to revive Rama, Lakshmana and the vanaras.

The sage said Do not harm the mountain and keep it where it was. I will show you the place where the medicinal plants grow.

Hanumana thanked the sage, kept the mountain and collected the herbs. He then jumped in the sky and in a moment he was in Lanka.

The smell of the herbs was enough. Hanumana took the medicines along with him, whereever he went, around the battle field. All fallen vanaras, Rama and Laksmana sat upright.

All bowed down before Hanumana. Rama said to Hanumana that his name would be known all over, for ages to come. He asked Hanumana what he needed, Hanumana said he just wanted to embrace Rama.

Hanumana goes in search of medicine

Using his tail as a propeller, Hanumana jumped into the sky. He increased his size and in a moment, he crossed the ocean. Great was the speed with which Hanumana was travelling.
Leaving Himalayas, Hanumana reached Kailasha, where he saw the white peaked Rishyamukha.
There he landed. He could get a lovely fragrance but he could not locate the medicinal trees. These were divine trees and not visible to everybody.

Not seeing the medicines, Hanumana thought that Jambuvana was not sure of what he had said. There were no medicinal trees.

He then thought -Jambuvana was the son of Brahma and he would not say just anything. There must be a reason.

Hanumana bowed down to the mountain and requested it to show him the medicinal plants.

The mountain was quiet.

Jambuvana tells Hanumana about the medicine

Indrajit returning back, went straight where Ravana was.. He gave the news of his victory to Ravana.
He gave a detailed description of how he had managed to fell all the great vanaras, Rama and Lakshmana.

Ravana hugged his son and blessed him.

In the field, only two people were breathing - Vibhishana and Hanumana. They went around to see who all were alive. It was a terrible sight. Sugriva and the great vanaras and the army of millions of vanaras had all fallen.

Seeing Rama and Lakshmana fallen, Hanumana and Vibhishana could not control their tears.

Only person was breathing slightly, and that was Jambuvana. Vibhishana begged Jambuvana to help.
Jambuvana was not able to see anything. He said I have many arrows stuck on my body and I am unable to open my eyes. It is hearing a voice, I think it is Vibhishana. If that is so, then please fetch Hanumana.

Vibhishana told Jambuvana that Sugriva, Rama and Lakshmana had all fallen, and way had to be thought of, to revive them.

Jambuvana said There is only person who can help now. That is Hanumana. If he is breathing, then do not worry. All will be saved.

Vibhishana said Hanumana is here, next to you.

Hanumana touched Jambuvana's feet.

Jambuvana said - You alone, Hanumana, can save all. Fly up into the sky. See where the Himalayas are. There you will see a mountain called Rishyamukha, south of Kailasha. It has peaks, white in color. On that peak you will find four medicinal trees. These are four different kinds of medicines. These trees shine in the night. They are called Vishalyakarani, Mritasanjivani, Sancharini and Suvarnakarini.

These medicines have to fetched before day break.

(Here Krittivasa says that this is not mentioned in the Ramayana of Valmiki).

Mahodara and Trishira fall

Seeing Narantaka fall, Mahodara came riding an elephant. Trishira also joined him. They both attacked Angada with their weapons. Angada fought bravely.
Seeing Angada surrounded, Hanumana joined Angada. Devantaka hurled a weapon at Hanumana. Angry, Hanumana kicked Devantaka to death.
Mahodara then attacked Nila. Nila hurled a boulder and that crushed both Mahodara and his elephant.

Trishira, with a sword in his hand, then attacked. Hanumana jumped on his chariot. Snatching the sword from his hand, Hanumana cut of Trishira with that sword. Trishira was dead.

Dhumraksha

The two armies met and the sky was overcast with arrows, trees and rocks. Dhumraksha called out - Where are the hermits hiding? Come and face your death. You have come so far to die. Forget any hopes of getting back Sita.
A vanara said - You have eyes but are still blind. Else how can a mere mortal bridge the ocean. Vishnu has been born to put an end to the rakshashas.
Angry, Dhuraksha picked up a mace and started killing vanaras.
Hanumana saw the vanaras fleeing. He went and said to the rakshasa - Fight me, if you can.
Grabbing a huge boulder , Hanumana dashed it on the chariot of the demon, killing the charioteer and the horses.
Dhumraksha attacked Hanumana with his mace. The mace hit Hanumana and broke into pieces.
Hanuman slapped him, and the demon fell down.
Hanumana then started kicking him, and that killed the demon.

Seeing Dhumraksha fall, his army started fleeing. Some went to Ravana and told him about the fall of Dhumraksha.

Bridge is built

Rama sent for Nala. Nala came and bowed down at Rama's feet. Rama said I having problems crossing the ocean and you did not let me know you had the power to help me.
Nala said I am an ordinary vanara. There are bigger heroic vanaras in the group. How can I say something in front of them. Let me tell about my childhood days. I used to live near the lake Mansarovara. Brahma used to come to meditate at the banks of lake. I used to throw Brahma's kushi (a copper spoon used for worship) in the waters of the lake. Everyday Brahma would get a new kushi, and everyday I would throw it in the water. Brahma then said whatever you throw in the water anywhere, will float. If touched rocks and trees together, they would stick to each other. Brahma's boon will help me build a bridge for you. Let the vanaras get boulders, rocks and trees. I will use that to build a bridge in a month.
Sand, trees and rocks were thrown in the ocean and they stuck together and floated. Thus in a day, one yojana was finished. Taking the name of Rama, the vanaras began getting hills which were broken into pieces and placed in the ocean.
In places, on the bridge, small huts were built for Rama to stay in. The work proceeded smoothly.
Hanumana got a hill for Nala, and Nala took it using his left hand. This angered Hanumana. He got a huge mountain, broke it into two - and taking one part in his tail and the other in his hand, he moved swiftly towards Nala. Nala sensed Hanumana was angry, so he went to Rama and asked for help. Hanumana did not dare cross over Rama, so he came down and placed the mountain pieces there. Rama asked Hanumana the cause of his anger. Hanumana said when he got the rocks for Nala, he took them using his left hand, which was not a good sign.
Rama said do not loose your temper. A worker uses his left hand more and that should not anger you. Please concentrate on the actual objective. Rama had Nala and Hanumana hug each other and forget their differences. The mountain pieces that Hanumana had got were put on the bridge. Ten yojanas of the bridge became ready.
A bunch of squirrels seeing this decided to help. They rolled in the sand and went to the bridge and went and threw that sand there, filling the gaps.
Hanumana seeing this removed the squirrels from there. The squirrels went to Rama and told him that Hanumana was not letting them help.
Rama called Hanumana and told him what he had done was not good. Everyone was helping as much as they could and their efforts should be appreciated.
Hanumana realized his mistake.
Rama then placed his hand over the squirrel.
Hanumana went and told the other vanaras not to say anything to the squirrels.
Seventy yojanas were bridged in twenty days. Hanumana then jumped over to Lanka, broke pieces of the fencing and got that for the bridge building.
In a month, the bridge was built.

With the bridge completed, Nala went to Rama and reported the same. Rama pleased said I do not have anything to give you now except my blessing. When I am in Ayodhya, I will give you rare precious gems.
Nala said I do not need that. I need something else, which is priceless. I want you to place your foot my head- the foot that Lakshmi worships.

Ramam placed his right foot on Nala's head.

Ramam then said Let us all go to the bridge which Hanumana was guarding. Rama with Sugriva and Vibhishana went to the bridge.

Rama then said to Nala - Please erect a small place where I plan to worship Shiva. A small enclosure was made on the bridge and a white Shiva Linga was constructed there. Rama asked Hanumana to get him white lotuses. Hanumana set forth for Kailasha where the lotuses bloomed. Plucking a thousand lotus flowers, Hanumana got them for Rama.

Rama began his worship. Shiva came there and held his hands saying Why do you worship me Rama, when I worship you.
Rama said You are my Lord and I am a devotee of yours. Please accept my worship so that I can kill Ravana.

Shiva said - Ravana is my devotee. He brought forth his doom by abducting Sita. He will die in the battle. Go to Lanka and finish your task.

Rama started his journey with Lakshmana, who were followed by Sugriva and Vibhishana.

The air was ripe with the sounds of Victory to Rama.

The demons hearing this went to Ravana.

Hanumana goes to Rama

Hanumana carefully placed Sita's jewel in his body and went to the shores of the ocean. Climbing on a mountain, he jumped upwards towards the sky. He let out a loud roar which could be heard everywhere.
On the the other side of the ocean, hearing this, Jambuvana said Hanumana is on his way back, having achieved his objective.

In a blink of an eye, Hanumana reached the other end of the ocean. He came greeted the vanaras and bowed down to Angada. He then hugged Jambuvana and the other vanaras. He then had his fill of fruits, which the other vanaras got for him.

Hanumana then told them all about how he crossed the ocean, how he met Sita and how he finally burnt the city.

The vanaras then decided to go back and tell Sugriva and Rama what had happened. They went off and reached the garden of Sugriva. This was a garden full of honeycombs. None had permission to come there. Seeing the honeycombs, they wanted to have the honey but were afraid of Sugriva. They went to Angada and asked for his permission. Angada agreed.

The vanaras then started attacking the honeycombs and had their fill of honey. Intoxicated with honey, they started fighting among themselves.

A vanara who was guarding the garden tried to stop them but got beaten up. He went to Sugriva and told them what was happening.

Sugriva went to Lakshmana and told him what was happening. Rama wanted to know who were these vanaras. Sugriva said these were the great heroes who had gone towards the south. They had probably got news of Sita and which was they were celebrating their joy.

Rama said I am very pleased to hear this. Please send for Angada and Hanumana immediately.

From a distance Rama saw Hanumana approaching. He was wondering what kind of news Hanumana was bringing.

Hanumana bowed down in front to Rama and touch his feet. He then told him about what had happened. He then gave to Rama, the jewel that Sita had given.

Rama had tears in his eyes.
