Saving Ahalya

Vishwamitra was pleased to see Rama kill Taraka. Rama said it was possible with the blessings of Vishwamitra. The sage wanted to see what the Rakshashi looked like.
Seeing the dead rakshashi the sage was stunned. He had not seen anyone so ugly before.
Vishwamitra then pointed to a spot and said that was the spot where Pawana was born. Pointing to a stone nearby, he asked Rama to place his foot on that.
Rama asked why should he touch that stone with his foot.
Vishwamitra then said :
Brahma had created many beautiful women, of which one was Ahalya. Her beauty was incomparable in the three worlds.
The sage Gautama married Ahalya. Indra was a student of Gautama.
Once when Gautama was away, Indra came to his hut. Seeing Gautama not in the house, he took Gautama's form and entered the house.
Thinking it to be her husband, Ahalya wanted to know why he had come back so early.
Indra said I was thinking of you and was not able to concentrate on my meditation. That is why I came back. Come to me and embrace me.
Ahalya could not refuse her husband and she came to Indra. They went into the inner rooms where they slept together. Unmindful that Ahalya was the wife of his Guru, Indra had sex with her and left.

When Gautama came back home, he asked her why she did not look normal. Ahalya said you should know as it was your doing.

It was as if the skies fell on Gautama. Meditating he realized what Indra had done. He said : Indra, you have give a good return of what I have taught you so far. You have ravised my wife. Let your body get a thousand sores.

In anger, the sage cursed his wife to become a stone. Ahalya wanted to know when she get freedom.

Gautama said, what I have said will happen. In the house of Dashratha, Rama will be born. To save his sacrifice, Vishwamitra will bring Rama. When Rama places his foot on you, you will be free.

Hearing this Lakshmana said, how will Rama place his foot on the stone, knowing its a brahmana woman.  Vishwamitra said, Rama, she not a woman now, but a stone.

Hearing this, Rama placed his lotus foot on the stone. The curse was lifted, Ahlaya was free and Gautama came there to receive his wife.
